The City Council needs to hear citizen support for
planned flood channel improvements

An approving vote at a June 1 City Council hearing could speed the removal or reduction of flood insurance premiums for approximately 7,000 Huntington Beach homes and businesses - and there's a quick and easy way for you to help! However, let me first update you on the proposed project that could bring these benefits to reality.

Parkside Estates Updates

Shea Homes is appearing before the Huntington Beach City Council on June 1 to obtain approval of the changes to the Parkside Estates plan required by the California Coastal Commission. In a nutshell, the Commission’s land use changes reduced the number of homes from 170 to 111, which means there will be less traffic than with the original plan. The plan now also has more open space – 23 acres in all, including more than six acres of wetlands.

Even with the reduction in the number of homes, we remain committed to constructing regional infrastructure improvements. Our latest cost estimate for these improvements is approximately $15 million, which includes constructing multi-million-dollar levee and flood control improvements that will result in a new flood map for Huntington Beach.

When that new map is issued, approximately 7,000 Huntington Beach homes and businesses could become eligible for reduction or elimination of mandatory flood insurance premiums.*

Here’s How You Can Help

The City Council’s approval of these changes is a critical step in bringing improved flood protection to Huntington Beach. Even if you've previously sent letters in support of Parkside Estates, now it’s time for the City Council to hear that you support the revised project and the infrastructure benefits it will provide.

We’ve made it easy to send a letter in support. Just click on this link and you’ll be directed to our “Support Parkside Estates” page, where it takes just a few keystrokes to send your support letter to the City Council.

We also need concerned citizens like you to come to the hearing and speak in support of better flood protection and relief from high mandatory flood insurance premiums.
